How a New Laser System May Hold Hope for Mesothelioma Tumor Removal

Group of medical professionals standing in hospital hallway

Mesothelioma not only is a rare cancer, but it manifests in places of the body that are hard to perform surgery on. Since mesothelioma is found in the lungs, abdomen, and heart, and is typically discovered in late stages, it is hard to perform surgery on or remove the tumors that have grown. However, a new laser system could help mesothelioma patients and improve surgeons’ abilities to remove tumors caused by this terrible cancer.

When you or a loved one is diagnosed with mesothelioma, it can feel like you have no options for helping you pay your bills. When your cancer was caused by unnecessary exposure that was the fault of someone else, then you shouldn’t have to worry about paying for your medical expenses. A mesothelioma lawyer from Frost Law Firm, PC can help you recover what you’re owed for your damages.

Laser System for Tumor Removal

This new laser system could help surgeons more accurately remove tumors from cancer patients’ bodies because it can better identify cancer and healthy cells. This means that the surgeries would be more accurate because surgeons would be able to more precisely remove tumors without damaging healthy cells.

The technology is being developed by British researchers who just received a $1.2 million grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to continue working on the laser. Professor Jonathan Shephard is leading this research and is who was awarded this grant.

What makes these lasers different is the way that they function. They view cells at a higher resolution so that surgeons can better identify which cells are cancerous and which are healthy. Then the lasers have shorter pulses than usual lasers, which allows doctors to be more precise in their cuts to remove tumors from the healthy tissue.

When a laser is on for too long, it can burn the surrounding tissue even though it’s removing the tumor. That’s why these lasers are so innovative—their short pulses keep healthy cells from burning.

What This Means for Mesothelioma Patients

Right now, the lasers are being tested on removing brain tumors. This is a type of surgery that needs extreme precision because damaging brain cells could prove catastrophic for patients. If this laser successfully removes brain tumors with minimal or no damage to the healthy tissues, then mesothelioma patients could be the next to experience tumor removal that’s better than before.

Since mesothelioma tumors are typically located in the lungs, abdomen, and heart, removal can be complicated. The removal of any tumors can be dangerous if healthy cells are damaged, but the lungs and heart are especially vulnerable and cannot be damaged. Much like removing a tumor from a brain, removing a mesothelioma mass from the lungs or heart relies on precision and correctly identifying which cells are cancerous and which are healthy.

These lasers could be crucial for patients with mesothelioma who need their tumors removed because they could limit the amount of damage done when they’re removed from their bodies. Previously inoperable tumors could become operable and give patients a chance at recovery that they might not have had before.

Our Experience Is Personal

Scott L. Frost’s Family Experience with Lung Cancer

For most of his life, Scott L. Frost’s father, who was in the construction industry, worked with and sold products containing asbestos without knowing the materials were dangerous. He was diagnosed with lung cancer 40 years after starting his career, leading Scott’s family to fight like they had never fought before.

Pictured here with his wife of over 50 years, Scott’s father eventually succumbed to the cancer. Since then, Scott has made it his mission to do everything in his power to make sure corporations understand how dangerous asbestos is and prevent future generations from suffering as his family did, as well as support research that may lead to finding a cure.
