The weedkiller Paraquat is so dangerous that, in order for it to be sold in the United States, it must be dyed blue as a warning, scented to discourage contact, and laced with a vomit-inducing agent in case it is swallowed. Not only is it highly poisonous upon immediate contact, but it has also been shown to cause Parkinson’s disease and birth defects. Yet it can still be legally sold and used in the United States. This is not the case in the rest of the world. Paraquat has been banned in over 30 countries—including China, the country in which it is primarily manufactured.

What Companies Manufacture Paraquat?
The chemical paraquat dichloride is probably best known in the U. S. under the commercial name Gramoxone, manufactured by the company Syngenta. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against Syngenta for its negligence in the manufacturing, promotion, and sales of Paraquat-containing weedkillers. The U.S.-based Chevron Chemical Company is also currently facing lawsuits due to its heavy involvement in the manufacturing, sales, marketing, and distribution of Paraquat herbicides.
But does Paraquat have other names? In fact, there are multiple Paraquat products manufactured and sold by multiple companies. At least 377 companies worldwide sell Paraquat-containing products. Knowing what products contain Paraquat and which companies manufacture Paraquat is essential to determining whether or not you may have been exposed.

Is Paraquat in Roundup?
Both Paraquat and Roundup are powerful weedkillers that have had lawsuits filed against their manufacturing companies in recent years. It’s understandable that there is confusion between the two products, leaving many wondering: Is Paraquat contained in Roundup? Are Roundup and Paraquat the same? The answer is no, these are two separate products using different chemicals to kill weeds.
Monsanto’s Roundup does not contain Paraquat. And Paraquat products do not contain glyphosate, the chemical used in Monsanto’s Roundup. Glyphosate is a weaker chemical than Paraquat, and many farmers use the two chemicals together to more thoroughly eliminate unwanted plant growth.
There is even greater similarity between the two herbicides—both Paraquat and the chemicals in Roundup are known to cause Parkinson’s disease. But because these are two different products made by separate manufacturers, the lawsuits against the companies are handled separately.
Why Are Paraquat Lawsuits Important?
Through legal action, our firm works to bring the severe problems in our country closer to solutions. When multibillion-dollar corporations like the ones listed above continue to sell products that end thousands of lives, there needs to be action taken to stop these injuries and deaths.
There is a known link between Paraquat and Parkinson’s disease, and studies showing the dangers associated with prenatal exposure to Paraquat have emerged over the past year. Research-based evidence has demonstrated again and again the dangers of Paraquat to the human body. Yet agrochemical manufacturers, marketers, and sellers, as well as government agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), have made minimal efforts toward stopping exposure to this toxic chemical.
When Paraquat lawsuits first began to be filed against manufacturing companies, they were filed on an individual basis. However, because of the large numbers of plaintiffs (people filing lawsuits) with similar and related cases, the Paraquat lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL). This is a way for multiple related cases to be handled in a single court. Based on updates current as of October 2021, there are nearly three hundred actions pending in the Paraquat MDL. In this MDL, Judge Nancy Rosenstengel of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois will be overseeing the trial set for November 2022.
