From the Newsletter: But I Smoked…

Scott Frost shares his insights from our newsletter:

Lung cancer often carries a kind of stigma that other illnesses don’t.

After a diagnosis, people often say the same thing:

“I guess this is my fault. I smoked.”

That assumption can make people believe they don’t have any real options.

But the reality is often more complicated than that.

I recently wrote a short article answering the question: Is It Possible to File a Legal Claim for Lung Cancer If You Smoked?

In it, I explain how asbestos exposure can still play a role in lung cancer cases — even when someone has a history of smoking.

This issue is also personal for me.

My father wasn’t a smoker, but he still developed cancer after years of asbestos exposure.

Seeing what our family went through is one of the reasons I do this work today. It’s my reminder that the story behind a diagnosis is often very different from what people
assume.

Yes, smoking can increase the risk of lung cancer.

But asbestos exposure is a well-documented cause of lung disease and cancer, too.

And in some cases, both exposures exist at the same time.

The problem is that the shame and stigma around smoking can stop people from exploring the cause of their illness, or seeking representation if there’s a case to be made for liability.

They assume the answer is already decided.

They assume they’re the ones at fault. Even when they know they’ve been exposed to asbestos or other harmful agents.

So they never look any further.

But families deserve answers.

And they deserve to understand the full picture before ruling anything out.

Your choices affect you. But so does your environment, and the people around you.

Don’t assume you’re ineligible for damages just because you smoke. Let’s talk things through.
