From the Newsletter: Three Extra Screws?

Scott Frost shares his insights from our newsletter:

There are two kinds of people when assembling IKEA furniture:

Those who calmly read (and then reread) the instructions.

And those standing in the garage with disheveled hair, holding three extra screws,
insisting everything is fine.

Sometimes life feels suspiciously similar to Step 14 of an IKEA project.

You’re confused.
Slightly irritated.
And pretending to be calm.

Over time, I’ve learned those moments can be useful.

They humble you.
They sharpen you.
And they remind you that confidence and competence are not always the same thing.

I was talking about that recently on the Best Practices with Kenny Berger podcast,
where I shared a few lessons I’ve learned the hard way over the years.

One of the biggest:

Staying teachable usually serves you better than pretending you already know
everything.

That applies in court.

And occasionally in the garage, staring at a bookshelf leaning three degrees to the left.

If you’d like the full conversation (and a few lessons that don’t involve furniture), you can
listen here.

P.S. Are you the reread-the-instructions type, or the “extra screws probably aren’t
important” type?

P.P.S. And if you ever run into a situation involving asbestos or mesothelioma—or a
setback far more serious than leftover screws—reach out to us. I’m always happy to
help point people in the right direction.
