Lawyers are professionally suspicious people.
It’s part of the job.
After enough years of doing difficult work, you start paying attention when things don’t quite make sense.
Most of the time, it’s nothing.
Every once in a while, it becomes one heck of a story.
About a decade ago, commercial trucks in New Orleans started getting into accidents at a suspiciously high rate.
At first, they looked like ordinary accidents.
A car would drift into an 18-wheeler’s path.
There’d be a collision.
Injuries would be reported.
Lawsuits would follow.
And then it happened again.
And again…
And again.
The strange part wasn’t just how many accidents there were.
It was how similar they were.
Eventually, investigators discovered they had all been following the same playbook.
Someone would intentionally cause the accident.
The driver would flee the scene.
A passenger would suddenly become the driver.
Witnesses would suddenly appear and blame the truck.
Injury claims would be filed.
Lawsuits would follow.
Federal prosecutors alleged there were 246 staged accidents over the course of more than a decade.
That’s not a typo.
More than sixty people have been charged as part of the investigation.
If that’s where the story ended, it would already sound unbelievable.
It doesn’t.
The investigation later grew to include allegations of witness tampering, unnecessary medical procedures, and the murder of a cooperating witness.
Somehow, I’ve still only told you the short version.
