I spend a lot of my professional life thinking about what happens next.
If we make this argument, how will the jury hear it? If this witness says one thing, what happens when the other side asks something else?
Thinking a few moves ahead comes with the job, which may be why horror movies can drive me a little crazy.
Because horror movies depend on people making spectacularly bad decisions.
Strange noise in the basement?
Obviously, investigate. Alone. Preferably without turning on any lights.
Creepy door that absolutely should not be opened?
Well, of course you now have to know what’s behind it.
Fortunately, people have studied this very important problem.
Rotten Tomatoes put together 31 rules for surviving a horror movie, including:
Stay away from barns, basements, and attics.
Put down that scary-looking book.
Stay out of cornfields.
Never stop to help strangers.
And for the love of God, don’t trust kids.
Of course, it’s easy to sit safely on the couch and wonder what these people are thinking.
We know they’re in a horror movie. We hear the ominous soundtrack.
They don’t.
There’s probably a lesson in there somewhere about hindsight.
But it’s Halloween week, so I’m not going to look for one.
