From the Newsletter: Didn’t This Go Away?

Scott Frost shares his insights from our newsletter:

Time has a way of making certain things disappear.

Pay phones.

Video rental stores.

The friends’ phone numbers you’d committed to memory.

But some things stick around much longer than we expect.

The lyrics to a song you haven’t heard in years.

The phone number from the house you grew up in.

The commercial jingle you wish you could forget.

Some things just refuse to leave.

A lot of people assume asbestos was something that caused problems a long time ago, but then quietly faded into history.

The truth is, it never completely went away.

In fact, the United States didn’t enact a complete ban on all types of asbestos until 2024.

You read that right.

And even though the ban is now complete, you can’t erase decades of past use with the stroke of a pen.

Older homes and buildings still contain materials that have been there for generations.

Workers may still encounter legacy products that contain asbestos.

And many families are still dealing with the consequences because the exposure may have happened twenty, thirty, or even forty years before someone ever became sick.

Suddenly, they’re trying to remember things they haven’t thought about since their now grown children were in diapers.

The name of an old company.

A summer job.

A building they worked in for a few years.

The kinds of details that seem unimportant right up until they aren’t.

That’s why so many families find themselves looking backward, trying to piece together a story that began a very long time ago.

Some things quietly fade into history.

And some things linger far longer than we realize.
