From the Newsletter: It’s Never on the Menu

Scott Frost shares his insights from our newsletter:

If you’ve ever watched Kitchen Nightmares, you’ve probably seen this play out.

A restaurant owner thinks they know what the problem is.

Maybe it’s the menu.
Maybe it’s the staff.
Maybe it’s just a slow season.

Then Gordon Ramsay walks in, takes one look around, and realizes the issue isn’t any
of that.

It’s something less obvious.
Something that’s been sitting there the whole time.

Rotten food sitting in the fridge.
A kitchen that’s dirtier than anyone wants to admit.
Food going out that isn’t even cooked properly.

And once he points it out, everything else starts to make sense.

That same thing happens in a lot of the cases we handle.

People come in with a sense of what the issue is.

They assume it was too long ago.
Or that there wasn’t enough exposure to matter.
Or that if no one raised concerns at the time, there’s nothing to look into now.

On the surface, those assumptions seem reasonable.

But they’re often focused on the wrong thing.

Because in these cases, the real issue usually isn’t the one people notice first.

It’s something deeper.

Something that only becomes clear once you start asking better questions.

And once the right pieces start to come together, the picture changes.

Just like in those restaurants, where the problem wasn’t what anyone thought it was at the beginning.

Sometimes it’s not about what looks wrong.

It’s about what’s been overlooked.
